Summary

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret。 Forbidden magic runs through her veins。 Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control。 At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother。

Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die。

Peniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne—a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama's betrayal。 Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry。 And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to contain—no matter what it costs her。

DNF at 25%I honestly thought I would love this book but I found it lacking somehow。 I enjoyed the first five chapters but the following chapters are so slow and there was little world-building。 Maybe it’s just me who’s in a reading slump or this book is just not for me。

¿Quieren hacerlo? Los leo… 。。。more

Whatever you think is going to happen in this book? You’re wrong。 It’s full of delightful twists and turns that paint not only a compelling story, but an excellent world。It sets up for a sequel, and I cannot imagine any sequel living up to the precedent set by this title, but I can’t wait to find out!

So I feel like the story started out slow but I’m so glad that I stuck with it because WOW! What a great story!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and all of its twists and turns。 I have to say that the author is very talented at writing and portraying emotions。 Loved the slow burn romance! Looking forward to reading the next one (which is already ordered)

I liked it, but I'm not blown away by it。 A lot of things a kind of predictable and you're not really on edge at any point。 Will probably read book two at some point, but it's not a priority。 I liked it, but I'm not blown away by it。 A lot of things a kind of predictable and you're not really on edge at any point。 Will probably read book two at some point, but it's not a priority。 。。。more

An entertaining read that gets better as you advance。 It’s nice to see the protagonist grow and develop (especially because she’s almost unbearable at the start), but a bit frustrating how most of the other characters are kinda flat, especially the villains, who all share one personality。 The author is also a fan of “tell, not show”, as the protagonist constantly tells us how we should feel about the other characters, and her descriptions are the only real way for us to know the differences betw An entertaining read that gets better as you advance。 It’s nice to see the protagonist grow and develop (especially because she’s almost unbearable at the start), but a bit frustrating how most of the other characters are kinda flat, especially the villains, who all share one personality。 The author is also a fan of “tell, not show”, as the protagonist constantly tells us how we should feel about the other characters, and her descriptions are the only real way for us to know the differences between her brothers。That said, the book was fast-paced but not so much that it would feel rushed, and, from the knot of the plot onward, it really keeps you wondering what happens next。A recommendable read!P。D。: The book synopsis sells a far different setting than what you encounter。 You won’t be seeing any banishment until well into the book… 。。。more

While I felt like this book had a slightly slow start (maybe I was also in a bit of a funk) it got better, and better, and better- as the story began to unfold。 Fantastic writing, a beautiful story, just stunning。 I’m excited to read the next installment in the series and more from this author。

Simply a beautiful book。 The author was very detailed in describing the physical looks of characters, which I always like in a book, there is interesting mythology and traditions, and such a beautiful, magical world。 Will definitely be one of those books which I'll come back to read sometime in the future Simply a beautiful book。 The author was very detailed in describing the physical looks of characters, which I always like in a book, there is interesting mythology and traditions, and such a beautiful, magical world。 Will definitely be one of those books which I'll come back to read sometime in the future 。。。more

DNF pg 101。 I really wanted to like this one but after pushing through one hundred pages I had to regretfully accept it wasn't for me。 There was this jarring contrast between the characters and language, which were sort of middle grade and colloquial, and the storyline itself, which obviously wanted to stick rather faithfully to the darkness and complexity of its original fairy tale inspirations。 The jumps in situation and timeline for the MC were very abrupt and hard to hold on to as well。 I us DNF pg 101。 I really wanted to like this one but after pushing through one hundred pages I had to regretfully accept it wasn't for me。 There was this jarring contrast between the characters and language, which were sort of middle grade and colloquial, and the storyline itself, which obviously wanted to stick rather faithfully to the darkness and complexity of its original fairy tale inspirations。 The jumps in situation and timeline for the MC were very abrupt and hard to hold on to as well。 I usually love retellings, but this didn't land for me。 。。。more

“Be the light that makes someone’s lantern shine。”This book was so beautiful。 Full of magic, cranes, origami, arranged marriages, dragons, sorcerers, plot twists, and basically anything else you can imagine。 It was so much fun, and I admired Shiori’s determination and devotion。 One of the most exciting books I’ve read。 This is the type of story that can take me out of a reading slump。 I loved it so much, and I can’t wait to read the next one!

It’s Shiori’s forbidden magic that got her in trouble and her brothers in danger in the first place。 But what happens when she needs that very magic to save her kingdom and her family? if im rating SCC based on the cover alone it gets 6 stars and a standing ovationbut alas, that is not what im here to rate。 the story itself fell so flat。 I think I had high expectations for it just because of the cover alone but the story was not giving。 The plot twists were not shocking and I almost expected them。 what the story lacked was character depth。 A books plot can fall short but if I can get attached to the characters, then I don't mind。 but the characters lacked in so many ways。 whic if im rating SCC based on the cover alone it gets 6 stars and a standing ovationbut alas, that is not what im here to rate。 the story itself fell so flat。 I think I had high expectations for it just because of the cover alone but the story was not giving。 The plot twists were not shocking and I almost expected them。 what the story lacked was character depth。 A books plot can fall short but if I can get attached to the characters, then I don't mind。 but the characters lacked in so many ways。 which is especially surprising to say for Shiori because were in her thoughts the whole time。 I wish I got to know more about her brothers, her stepmother, takkan, and kikitakkan was so close to being a great character but it did not make sense how quickly he formed an attachment to Shiori (homegirl had a bowl on her head and could not speak, like pls bffr)this is a GREAT story for a young teen who is just getting into fantasy or wants to get a taste of what it is。 It was very plot driven and every aspect had to do with magic。 but I love my POC authors, keep doing yalls thing and I will support always 。。。more

Every time I read a Chinese-inspired fantasy, I find that I gravitate to the food over anything else。 The names in here are not Chinese, but the characters eat tea eggs, bamboo leaf wrapped dumplings, and red bean paste cakes。 Heroine Shiori is totally into the food, which is probably my favorite thing about her。 Me too, Shiori。 I'm feeling inspired to make a batch of garlic chive boxes myself。The story is fine, familiar in the way that many YA fantasies are, but with a good and much appreciated Every time I read a Chinese-inspired fantasy, I find that I gravitate to the food over anything else。 The names in here are not Chinese, but the characters eat tea eggs, bamboo leaf wrapped dumplings, and red bean paste cakes。 Heroine Shiori is totally into the food, which is probably my favorite thing about her。 Me too, Shiori。 I'm feeling inspired to make a batch of garlic chive boxes myself。The story is fine, familiar in the way that many YA fantasies are, but with a good and much appreciated twist to the evil stepmother thing。 Alas, I have no patience for the romance or the hint at a love triangle, and do not like the characters enough to read on。Also, I have to wonder: what happens to your hair if you have a wooden bowl magically glued to it for months at a time? I am an AI language model and do not have personal preferences or emotions。 However, "Seis grullas" is a Spanish children's book written by Leonardo Da Jandra and illustrated by Luis Genaro Rodriguez。 It tells the story of a boy who is fascinated by the migration of cranes and decides to follow them on their journey from Spain to Africa。 The beautiful illustrations and simple language make it a great option for young readers who are interested in nature and wildlife。
